The Basics Of Precision Die Stamping

Manufacturers use a precision tool called stamping die to cut sheet metal into desired forms. The forming and cutting sections of the precision die stamping tool are made of tool steel, a special type of steel that can be hardened. Sometimes other hard materials like carbide are also used to make stamping dies due to their wear-and-tear-resistant nature.

Generally, precision die stamping is a cold operation, so the sheet material or the die itself does not require any heat. Still, the process does generate some amount of heat as it involves friction. This is why stamped parts can often come out of the dies at high temperatures. This is normal in the precision die stamping process.

Types Of Stamping Dies

Stamping Processes

Precision die stamping involves multiple operations, the most common one being cutting. The metal is placed between two steel sections and trimmed. The parameters of the cutting operation depend on the properties of the material being used and the desired design. Extremely high force is required to cut metal and stress it to the point of total fracture.

Most progressive dies also involve a process called notching that progressively cuts the outside of the metal sheet to create desired notches or strip profiles.

Blanking And Piercing

Another important operating in precision die cutting is blanking. It is a cutting operation that is dual-purpose and is often used in large-scale operations where slugs are preserved for press-working in the future. The blanking process is also useful in cutting out finished parts from the metal sheet. A 'blank' is such a piece of metal slug that is cut from the sheet during this process or a starting piece that is saved to cut later.

Perforating or piercing is another important step in precision die cutting. This operation cuts the metal in such a way as to produce a hole of any desired shape in a formed part of a flat metal sheet. The major difference between blanking and piercing is that the slug is usually discarded in piercing while in blanking, the slug is saved for later use.

Lancing And Shearing

Lancing is the process of slitting or slicing the metal to keep the metal intact in the strip while also freeing it up. This operation is usually used in progressive dies for creating a flex, which is a part carrier.

To cut a straight line or slice in the metal sheet, the shearing method is used. This process usually produces square and rectangular blanks.
